Thai Island Dog & Cat Shelter

The volunteer program usually runs across two shift patterns: 7:00am–1:00pm or 1:00pm–7:00pm.

Morning shifts generally begin with dog walking, followed by cleaning, training support and socialising with cats and dogs. Afternoon shifts usually work in reverse, with cleaning, training and socialising earlier in the shift and dog walking later in the day.

Each shift includes one short break. Volunteers are expected to arrive on time, follow supervisor instructions and be ready for active work in warm, tropical conditions.

Volunteers must be at least 25 years old.

This placement is best suited to volunteers who are physically fit, emotionally resilient, reliable and comfortable working in hot, humid or wet conditions. Most days involve long periods on your feet, practical cleaning tasks, dog walking, animal care routines and the emotional realities of working with sick, injured or recovering animals.

No formal veterinary experience is required, but previous animal care, rescue, shelter or dog-handling experience can be helpful.

This is a working animal welfare shelter, not a holiday with animals. The work can be hot, physical, messy, repetitive and emotionally challenging.

Volunteers may walk 15,000–20,000 steps per day, often in humid or wet conditions. You may also encounter animals who are injured, unwell, frightened, recovering from trauma or waiting for adoption.

A calm attitude, respect for shelter procedures, kindness toward animals and flexibility with the daily rota are essential.

Start dates are available year-round, subject to shelter capacity and accommodation availability.

The current minimum stay is 1 month, with a maximum stay of 3 months.

All new volunteers complete a one-month probation period. Extensions beyond the first month are considered case-by-case based on shelter needs, accommodation availability, volunteer conduct and suitability.

Volunteers usually work 5 days per week, with two days off scheduled together according to the shelter rota.

Shifts are generally:

• Morning: 7:00am–1:00pm
• Afternoon: 1:00pm–7:00pm

Flexibility is expected, as the rota may change depending on animal needs, staffing, weather and centre priorities.

On-site volunteer rooms may be available, but they are limited and offered first-come, first-served.

Volunteer rooms have two single beds, although volunteers are not usually required to share unless travelling as a couple or with a friend. Rooms include a fan, shelves for personal belongings and mosquito protection.

If an on-site room is not available for your selected dates, you’ll need to arrange your own accommodation locally. O2E will advise whether a room is available once your booking details have been reviewed.

Meals are not included.

Volunteers can store groceries and prepare food in the volunteer kitchen if staying on site. There are also local restaurants, cafes, shops and convenience stores nearby where you can buy meals, snacks and supplies.

All animal interactions must be safe, humane and compassionate. Positive reinforcement methods are used only, and volunteers must follow all staff instructions around handling, walking, cleaning, feeding and animal safety.

Mobile phones are not permitted while on shift unless approved. Smoking is not permitted while walking dogs, and drug use is not tolerated.

Volunteers who do not follow animal welfare, safety or conduct expectations may be asked to leave the program.
