Many people pause when they first hear the phrase pay to volunteer. It is a fair question. If you are giving your time, energy and care to a project, why is there a fee?

The answer is simple: you are not paying to work. You are helping cover the real costs of hosting, preparing and supporting you responsibly.

Ethical volunteer programs require more than good intentions. They require safe accommodation, food, transport, training, supervision, project coordination, volunteer preparation, local staff time and ongoing care. These things all carry costs, especially for grassroots animal welfare and conservation organisations working with limited resources.

Most of the projects O2E supports are non-government, non-profit or community-led organisations. Their focus is on caring for animals, protecting ecosystems and supporting local communities — not running international travel logistics. Many do not have the time, staff or funding to manage volunteer enquiries, bookings, pre-departure support, accommodation, transport and supervision on their own.

That is where O2E helps bridge the gap.

We work with project partners to make sure volunteers are prepared, supported and placed where their presence is genuinely useful. We also help ensure the project receives the practical support it needs, whether that is through volunteer assistance, direct funding, resources or longer-term partnerships.

Where Does Your Money Go?

Your project fee helps cover the essential costs of your placement. This can include:

Your volunteer support

Accommodation, meals, local transport, preparation, project coordination and supervision.

Project operations

Staff time, animal care, equipment, maintenance, utilities, insurance, food, enrichment, conservation materials or other project-specific needs.

Responsible placement management

O2E’s work in screening projects, preparing volunteers, coordinating logistics, supporting communication and maintaining ethical standards before, during and after your placement.
